After exploring various methods to introduce our University of Applied Science students to innovation management, we discovered Innovation Way’s serious game. The first trial left a lasting impression, and the game continues to be a versatile tool for enabling students from diverse disciplines to collaborate effectively on innovation management systems. The seamless blend of high-quality content and engaging (fun) gameplay makes it an exceptional learning resource.
Serious Game
Home » Serious Game
The Innovation Management System (IMS) is a difficult concept to grasp, as there is no single silver bullet that will work for all companies. Implementing an IMS is a complex and dynamic task that requires a combination of knowledge and practice. Therein lies the secret of the Année de l’Innovation®.
L’Année de l’Innovation®
L’Année de l’Innovation® is a board game that simulates the development of a company’s innovation management system over the course of a year. In the guise of a game, it is a highly effective training tool that guarantees a particularly positive working atmosphere.
L’Année de l’Innovation® was developed in collaboration with innovation managers, professors of innovation management and international consultants. It meets the challenge of combining high-level technical content with an entertaining format.
The depth of this serious game gives access to different reading levels, allowing all participants to acquire knowledge regardless of their initial expertise.
L’Année de l’Innovation® is as effective a tool for training business school, engineering school or MBA students as it is for organising workshops with highly experienced management committees or inter-company training courses.

Workshop proceedings
L’Année de l’Innovation® is a serious game dedicated to training, which unfolds its full potential when effectively animated. Innovation Way can provide the facilitation and you can also be trained and certified as a facilitator to use the full potential of the game in workshops that you run yourself. A workshop usually consists of 4 stages.
1. Introduction
2. Game play
3. Retrospective
4. Keys to success
1. Introduction
A workshop usually begins with an introductory sequence designed to explain how the game works and its various elements. The aim is to explain to the participants that they have to work as a team to build a system capable of generating as much value (in the broadest sense) as possible. The game is played in 12 rounds, each round representing 1 month in real life. This introductory sequence typically lasts 30 minutes, and standard Creative Commons-licensed slides are provided for people who follow the facilitator certification programme.
2. Game play
The game itself is the core of each workshop. It lasts between 1.5 and 3.5 hours, depending on the profile of the participants: 1.5 hours for an awareness-raising session with students, 3.5 hours with experienced players who go through each action in detail. During this phase, the players build an IMS step by step, choosing which activities to implement and in which order. They see how their organisation’s capacity to innovate evolves through 4 indicators: the capacity to generate ideas, to put them into practice, to give them value and to cope with uncertainty. Random hazards also disrupt the game, making each experience absolutely unique.
3. Retrospective
The game is usually played in teams. Players share their visions and doubts, argue and make decisions together. Where should they start? How should they allocate resources? Should they focus on strategic thinking or jump into action? This dynamic is particularly engaging and the 3rd phase of the workshop consists of taking stock by looking back at the game. Using targeted questions, the facilitator encourages the groups to reflect on the choices made throughout the game. The retrospective is also an opportunity to compare the different strategies used by different teams. A retrospective questionnaire under a Creative Commons license is provided for people taking part in the facilitator certification programme.
4. Keys to success
This is the highlight of the show, which consists of putting into words the many feelings and insights that the players have identified during the game! During this final sequence, the facilitator takes over to present the key success factors for developing an IMS. This space is too short to list all the many lessons learned during the game, but they include: the main differences between an IMS in a start-up and in an established company, the balance between generating ideas and putting them into practice, the many professions involved in innovation, the importance of time and of considerinf a medium- and long-term perspective when implementing a system, etc. This phase, which lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour, is usually a revelation, putting into words the many feelings that the players have experienced throughout the game.
Let's talk about it
You can’t explain a game… you have to play it! Test it in 1 hour remotely!
Additional game modes [included]
"Improvement" and "Scenario" modes
In addition to the classic approach described above, L’Année de l’Innovaion® can be used to challenge a company’s existing IMS. The facilitator can also create game scenarios to meet specific learning objectives.
Accessories [as per license]
Participant's notebooks
Participants’ notebooks, which contain all the cards of the game on stickers and allow the player to justify his choices during the game, can be used. They help to maintain an ideal level of reflection and are a particularly welcome addition to the game.
The game boxes can contain cards in several languages.

Customer feedback
Many students, teachers, advisors, innovation managers and consultants in France and abroad have agreed to share their experiences with us. Many thanks to all of them!
In the minor “Managing Technology Innovation Projects”, we play the game each year with 40 students and 2 facilitators. It helps to collaborate and get a shared understanding, provides an overview of innovation processes and supports discussions about possible hazards and opportunities.

Johan conducted a great group training. We felt supported at every step, especially when navigating the many possible innovation activities that comprise the innovation management system. The supporting materials make this simulation easy to play with managers and to draw out the key lessons and best practices.

The Serious Game provides a fresh model for innovation management training in business schools and consulting organizations, giving learners new option besides boring theoretical learning. This is a novel and efficient tool for learners to experience innovation scenarios, benchmark against international standards and build systematic innovation management thinking.

How do you introduce people to innovation management principles without being an innovation engineer? A serious game.
How do you confront the realities of time and space with a game? L’Année de l’innovation !
A fun methodology that helps participants understand what innovation really is. An opportunity to compare different approaches (start-up, ETI, large group, etc.).
Ideal for: innovation teams, top and middle management.

I was immediately convinced by the business game, and even more after Johan certified me as a facilitator.
L’année de l’Innovation® is a fast-paced, fun approach that intelligently leads participants to question the basic concepts of innovation, but also (and above all) how to put them into practice in their own context.
